Blessing of Civil Marriages

Blessing of Civil Marriages and Renewal of Wedding Vows

While there are no liturgies provided in the Prayer Book for the blessing of a couple who have been married in a civil ceremony, it is a long-standing custom of the church to offer prayers for the blessing of people who wish to renew their marriage vows or seek God's blessing on a marriage that was performed in a civil context or in another jurisdiction.

This sometimes happens in the context of the Sunday morning service, or else in a private service at another time.

If you would like to arrange a time for your marriage vows to be renewed or your civil wedding to be recognised and blessed within the life of the Cathedral as your community of faith, please contact us so we can discuss the most appropriate form of ceremony and the best time for it to happen.
